Hydraulic Hammer Lubrication

Hydraulic hammers are commonly used in construction and demolition to break up roads, sidewalks, site pads, rocks, or any hard object that needs to be reduced in size for removal or further processing. These tools can be attached to a wide variety of equipment with a hydraulic system. They are commonly attached to backhoes, steer skids, and loaders.

The chisel sides up and down with extreme force to break up the concrete, rocks, etc. A hammer paste is recommended to seal out water and contaminates while providing lubricating film between the casing and the chisel. The lubricants must withstand extreme pressure and sliding action. Many hammer pastes contain copper, lead, or other soft metal to form a sacrificial coating between the casing and chisel. These lubricants become hazardous wastes that are expensive and difficult to dispose of.

How can we optimize hydraulic hammer lubrication?

SWEPCO 165 Moly-XP Universal Extreme Pressure Grease has proven to be an excellent choice for hydraulic hammer lubrication. The Moly and Graphite present in SWEPCO 165 form a lubrication film on the metal surfaces that is difficult to remove and stands up to harsh conditions present. The Calcium Sulfonate thickener provides superior rust and corrosion prevention with additional loading carrying and wear protection. SWEPCO 165 does not contain any hazardous or toxic ingredients.

The hydraulic system forces a ram up and down that drives the chisel. If the hydraulic fluid is from a central sump like the tractor pictured above, then SWEPCO 709 Universal Tractor Transmission/Hydraulic Fluid or SWEPCO 714 Heavy Duty TO-4/C-4 Transmission Fluid would work well in this application. If the fluid is from a stand-alone hydraulic sump then SWEPCO 703 Synthetic Multi-Grade AW Hydraulic Oil would be the fluid of choice.

By switching to SWEPCO products, customers will experience longer equipment life and smoother operations.
